Ryoko sticks her head through the wall. This is a humongous cel; Ryoko's face by itself nearly filled my scanner, and almost half the total area of the background isn't shown in the scan. Now this is an intriguing cel, from Tenchi Muyo! in Love (45m 39s). Ryoko is following GP Operative A through the crowded streets of Tokyo. At least 4 (probably 5) separate cels (plus a background) were needed to produce the final shot (right). The rearmost cel contains background characters only. Curiously, the two men at the left of the cel never appear in the movie production shots. Even more curiously, the man and woman are walking in opposite directions, yet they're drawn on the same cel, which means that particular cel could only be used for 3 or 4 frames! Why didn't they put the man and the woman on separate cels? The scene shows additional characters in the background who don't appear in my cel, so there was probably a fifth layer of cels.
The next layer of the cel is blank, and is upside down relative to the other cels. This puts the registration holes at the "wrong" side of the cel, so it can be moved relative to the rest of the picture. The third cel contains Ryoko, and this is the really neat bit: after painting the cel, someone with a sharp scalpel and a steady hand cut around Ryoko's outline to produce a Ryoko-shaped mini-cel. Look closely at the bottom left of Ryoko on the cel, and you can see where the cutout cel was cut straight across (below her arm) instead of following the outline. This mini-cel was placed on the blank cel. Thus, Ryoko could move around relative to all the other characters. You'll notice that her position on the cel doesn't match her position on the production shot.
